Dance
Visions program, “Isadora and the Power of Mythology.” is a
multifaceted program based on Isadora Duncan’s dances inspired
by Greek mythology. The works, many of which are choreographed
to music from Gluck's operas and based on the stories of Orpheus
and Iphegenia, are beautiful renditions of these myths. They are
tremendous in scope ranging from the highly spirited tributes to
Bacchus, to the theatrical, groundbreaking dances of the Furies
inspired by Rodin’s “Gates of Hell,” to spiritual pieces
evoking paradise. Another dance, a tribute to the goddess Diana
performed to Schubert’s “Symphony in C,” is an
exhilarating evocation of a hunting ritual.
Isadora Duncan
revolutionized the art of dance. Part of Duncan’s contribution
to the dance world was the prominence of classical music in her
works. This program features live music consisting of a chamber
quartet of strings and flute, as well as pianist Mark Fiedler
and soprano Leandra Ramm.
This
concert series has the excitement and appeal of being a
compilation of many art forms.
Popular actress and
performer Shirley Romaine introduces the myths throughout the
program with commentary, anecdotes and poetry. “Isadora
and the Power of Mythology” includes works that are true gems
of dance and culture The
performance consists of nine dancers.
Julia Levien serves as artistic consultant.
