Your World... in Dance

Your World... in Dance is a program conceived by Dance Visions for children tailored for different age groups. It has been performed at libraries, sections of it in concerts, and at the United Nations International School. This program was awarded a NYSCA grant through the Nassau Decentralization program in 2000 where it was presented at the Great Neck and Manhasset libraries.

The program, presented by Dance Visions under the direction of Beth Jucovy, explores sights, sounds and emotions in every day experience through the theme of the natural world. Dance composition is introduced and discussed. Additionally the dancers have an exploratory discussion with the audience members about the content of the pieces either before or after each piece shown. The audience members also participate in their own piece developed during the program.

Repertory includes humorous as well as serious pieces to poems, children's songs, and classical, modern and popular music. A variety of dance techniques are incorporated including modern dance, contact-improvisation, jazz, ballet, and the original choreography of Isadora Duncan, which shows the roots of American modern dance.

The program demonstrates the ability of the medium of dance to express feelings and experiences that all share. The program also demonstrates compositional ideas, various styles and approaches to dance, and introduces some of the history of America's vast dance heritage.

Dancers and choreographers in the program include professional dancers who are also dance educators and choreographers. They perform with Dance Visions and various other NYC companies.

"The dancing was beautiful, the material interesting, and the connection with the audience immediate and palpable. It was clear from the childrens' faces and reactions that they were absorbed and fascinated by what they saw. The audience participation was done in a very meaningful way."
